Mauritius is an island republic 550 km east of Madagascar in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It is known for its beautiful beaches and luxurious accommodation for the tourist and traveller and for its unique flora and fauna. The island is a multicultural democracy, the population being a harmonious mixture of immigrants from Africa, Europe, the Indian subcontinent and China. Mauritius boasts a pleasant 16 to 30°C climate all year round, and owing to its maritime situation there is a constant breeze to ward off high humidity.

Le Bocage International School (LBIS) offers an international secondary school education to boys and girls aged between 11 and 19. It officially opened its doors in January 1990. In the years since its inception, the school has grown rapidly and has achieved an international character providing a well-balanced education responsive to the needs of more than 650 students. LBIS offers International GCSE and International Baccalaureate examinations (see ACADEMIC CURRICULUM). There are several private English medium primary schools in Mauritius: a list can be obtained from the School Office or from our website.

This is the mantra that was created by our school community two years ago, and it is what I want you to take forth as you start 2018.

LEARN everything you can in 2018! You are about to begin one leg in the journey of lifelong learning, learning that will provide you with the tools to navigate yourself not only through your academics, but in all areas of your life. Be an active participant, and take ownership of your learning. Enquire and keep an open-mind on this journey and you will become more knowledgeable because of it.

BUILD positive relationships with your peers, teachers, parents and the whole LBIS and wider community. Care for each other and make an effort to build friendships. Demonstrate mature communicative and collaborative skills as you build these relationships, and be principled in those choices you make.

INNOVATE by taking risks, and reflect on those mistakes you make (you will make many!), and use those mistakes as lessons and you will be wiser because of them! Through creation and innovation, you will develop your higher level thinking skills, increasing your ability to learn and progress.

SUCCEED in trying your best, that is all we will ever ask of you! Create individual goals and targets for yourself; don’t compete with others, just compete with yourself. To succeed, you will need to be well-balanced, juggling your academics, your friends, your hobbies and other parts of your life.

2018 promises to be an exciting year, and I am delighted to welcome you to a school that aims to inspire innovative and holistic leaders for a changing world!

Welcome to the LBIS website where you can find numerous resources to give you a strong sense of our academic programme. LBIS is accredited to deliver the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Forms 1 to 5 and the Diploma Programme (DP) in Forms 6 and 7. The educational philosophy and guiding statements of the school closely aligns with those of the IB. The IB Learner Profile is at the centre of everything we do, both, within and outside of the classroom. We also offer the IGCSE to students in Forms 4 and 5. By browsing through the curriculum section of this site you will find overviews which outline the concepts, knowledge and skills which are being developed across the school in every subject we offer. The curriculum makes strong connections to real world issues and there is an emphasis on the development of skills which will prepare the students for success beyond their enrollment at the school. LBIS offers a stimulating and challenging environment for learning and we are always exploring ways to further improve teaching and learning in our school. We are proud of the high percentage of students every year who obtain bilingual IB Diplomas. We are also very proud of our staff who are committed to assisting our students to reach their academic, physical, social and emotional potential.

At LBIS Pastoral Care takes an inclusive function. It is inextricably linked with the academic curriculum and the structural organization of the school. Hence, the programme promotes “students personal and social development and fosters positive attitudes: through the quality of teaching and learning: through the nature of relationship amongst students, teachers and adults other than teachers; through the monitoring of students’ progress, academic personal and social; through specific pastoral and support systems and through extra-curricular activities and the school ethos. Our mission is to provide a supportive and caring environment which promotes the child’s personal, social and physical well being.  Thereby, we aim at fostering student’s understanding of and respect for different spiritual and cultural values whilst supporting and validating their own experiences and beliefs. Opportunities are thus provided to students to enlarge a range of interpersonal, social, moral, ethical and cultural issues, which will enable them to develop a positive moral character, personal and interpersonal skills. We thus aim at continuously improve the supportive processes for the children, teachers and the school: shaping teaching and learning: encouraging dialogues with students; developing partnerships with other services within the community; shaping the school organization, ethos and environment and developing tools for evaluating pastoral care standards. At LBIS the promotion of the health, well being, resilience, academic care and social capital is ensured by a team of people, comprising of the School counselor, the career’s counselor, the SEN and the life skills Coordinator, the Form coordinators and their team of Form Tutors, the Nurse, the health and safety officer, the CAS coordinator, the resource centre coordinator (librarian), the activity coordinators, the events coordinator, the curriculum department and the maintenance department. All the stakeholders mentioned above work as a team to ensure that at LBIS we uphold a school conditions that continuously promotes students’ welfare.
